Groundbreaking Ceremony

August 1, 2022

By Allison Wolff

Sideline Flats held its Groundbreaking Ceremony on Friday, July 29th. We were honored to be joined by Mayor James Mueller, as well as other officials for the City of South Bend, our many partners in this project, and reporters from ABC57 and WNDU.

During his speech, Developer of Sideline Flats, Chris Gormley thanked the community for being so welcoming and said “Although I’m not from this community, I grew up nearby in Kalamazoo, Michigan and so I understand the challenges that can go into doing a development in a university town. When my team and I acquired this property, we wanted to make sure that it was more than just a simple condo project or just another project. We wanted to make sure that this was something special. Our two main goals for this project were to one, really tie into and support the relationships between the alumni and this great city of South Bend and we also just wanted to provide another opportunity for the alumni to come back to a place where there’s home to so many amazing memories that they’ve been able to create here.”

Mayor Mueller took to the podium saying, “You know mayors always love ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings because it means we are making progress as a city…doing any sort of project in economic conditions like this, in some ways are even harder than it was a couple of years ago…We really appreciate just the persistence of our developers and the city team, coming together to make sure we can make this happen. I know there were a lot of thank yous to the zoning and planning teams, and of course, we are thankful to the council and planning commission for making updates to our ordinance that helped make this project possible But, we are also thankful for our engineering team so hopefully they’ll continue to make sure this project moves forward smoothly in the coming months and year ahead. And we are just excited to see it moving forward and excited to see what’s to come here, not just in this neighborhood but across the city as well.

Mark [McGill, South Bend Regional Chamber Director of Member Relations] did mention, you know, this is an iconic site. There is a bit of sorrow or sadness that we’ve lost Mulligan’s in our community but we know that what comes up next is going to be even better and look forward to everything it has to offer.”

Our Groundbreaking Ceremony was followed by an elegant cocktail hour at the Howard Park Event Center, where our friends, families, and Sideline Flats partners were able to discuss plans for moving forward and took time to celebrate the hard work put into this project so far.

We want to formally thank everyone who came out to our Groundbreaking Ceremony and those who could not attend but have been and continue to be a significant part of this project. We are looking forward to the next 14 months of construction and cannot wait for Sideline Flats to welcome residents in 2023.
